Ain’t no business like show business or, making lemonade out of a pile of lemons

Screenshot-382

As some of you know, I was born into a showbiz-type family.  Both of my parents were involved with the Sunset Valley Orchestra, my mother as the first female conductor of that orchestra and my father as conductor before she took over, then he went on to write music for movies and TV as a hit movie composer.

Screenshot-89 (2)

I still remember my father practicing his guitar in front of my brother Noah and me.  Gosh I miss that guy, Noah.  Sucks that he is dead.

Screenshot-278

This gets lost sometimes, but my mother was as well known and respected as my father was for her talent and her tireless work in bringing the orchestra to a new level.

Screenshot-291 (2)

She also supervised most of my musical training.

Yet my parents are not the only members of the family involved in entertainment of some sort.

Screenshot-50

My sister, Savannah, is the author of several books, the two most well known are Interview with a Mummy, based on her experiences in Egypt, and Dances with Ghosts.  Both of them were best sellers.  She’s also written articles on such subjects as the origin of nectar and the different types of death states.  There is even talk of a movie based on ‘Mummy’ but it’s just talks at the moment.  Savannah has put her adventuring and writing career on hold to raise her five (!) children (two adopted and three biological).

Screenshot-2 (4)

Even more successful as a writer was my aunt, Margaret.  She was my dad’s half-sister, who was actually born in England, and, Savannah tells me, spoke with a tiny hint of a British accent.  (She died when I was a baby, I never knew her.) Anyway, she wrote 26 or 27 (I don’t remember the exact number) books, mostly science fiction and fantasy.   My boss, Kristy Verhoeven, is currently working on a screenplay based on her Moon Colony series.  So, too, is Emmitt Stanley, the teenage son of Emmy Starr and Alan Stanley.  It’s pretty much a done deal that a movie will be made from my aunt Margaret’s book series.  But it’s also a race as to whose version gets made first.

Screenshot-4 (3)

My brother Noah followed dad into the orchestra.  He was a member of the exclusive quartet.

Screenshot-83

And then there’s me.  How I became an actor instead of a musician, especially with all the musical training, is still a mystery to me.

So now I’m back in Bridgeport, trying to make lemonade out of a whole pile of lemons.  Looks like I’ll be splitting time between the two cities, Bridgeport and Sunset Valley, for the time being while getting the fam sitch straight.  It’s not a schedule I like but hey, what can I do?

Screenshot-84

My first stop upon returning was Annabelle and Kyra’s apartment downtown.  I had forgotten how to use the call box so I was pressing buttons madly until I got the right combo.

Screenshot-86

“Oh… it’s YOU.”  Annabelle was not happy with me.  Again.

Screenshot-87

“Is Kyra in?”  I asked her.

“No, she’s practicing with Lola’s band.  You know they’re going on tour next week.”

I let out a deep breath.  “Oh yeah, that’s right.  I forgot all about that.”

Screenshot-88

“You were supposed to be gone two weeks, Sebastian.  It’s been two MONTHS.  Now that you’re back, you expect her to crawl right back into your arms.”

Screenshot-90

“Look, I had a family emergency.  My brother died, my parents are getting a divorce, my one nephew just had a baby, my other teenage nephews are out of control -- things are just a mess right now.”

Screenshot-91

“Save it for Oprah, buster.”  Annabelle wasn’t done.  “You needn't bother batting those baby blues at me, sonny boy, they don't work. Trust me on that one. Besides, you have NO idea what I've got to put up with day in and day out with Kyra. It's always Sebastian this and Sebastian that. When's he coming back? Is he on location this week, wonder what he’s up to...... BLEH!!! So I suggest you do something fast, or can it. Not interested."

Screenshot-92

While I waited for Kyra to return, I flipped through my latest script, a romantic comedy called Commitment Issues.  The one thing I haven’t done yet since becoming an actor is rom-com.  I don’t know how my comic timing would be, since it’s not something I really practiced in acting class.

On average I get about 4 to 5 scripts a month.  There were twelve waiting for me when I returned.

Musings on music

Screenshot-119

I was fiddling around with the big grand piano in our formal dining room, and I got to thinking.

Music is a big part of who we are as Plumbs.

Screenshot-5 (2)

It started with my grandmother, I think, and has gone all the way down the line.  My grandmother was Jamie Jolina, and when she wasn’t treating patients down at Sacred Spleen she was rocking out with her guitar, to the delight of her artist and writer friends.  My sister Savannah says if she weren’t a doctor she might well have made a career in music.

Screenshot-8

I found this old worn picture of my mother as a sock hopper girl, again with a guitar.

Screenshot-24 (3)

There is my grandmother again in the old farmhouse, with my dad listening and watching.

Screenshot-20

And of course, dad performing for none other than the Reaper himself.

Screenshot-4 (3)

Here’s an older picture of my brother, who now sadly is deceased.

Screenshot-56

Savannah, though she won’t admit it, has musical chops of her own.

Screenshot-94

Then there’s me.  Guess I couldn’t help it.  Especially given the fact that it was drummed (pun intended) into me at every occasion.  That was the day I’d gotten my electric guitar and I thought it would be cool to show it off.

The movies come callin’ again

Screenshot-46

Today I got a stark reminder that, while I’m back home in Sunset Valley with my family, chillin and relaxin and dealing with my family issues, I have a very real movie career that I have back in Bridgeport.

It came in the form of a movie script.  And not just any movie script.

Apparently these two medieval kingdoms, Aarbyville and Tredony, were at war, and a pirate from Aarbyville fell in love with a noble from Tredony.  Guess which character I’m being considered for?

Screenshot-80

You guessed wrong.

Yep, I’m up for the pirate role.  Actually, I think it’s kind of fun, although I’m not sure about all the fake hair they’re putting on me for it.   I think I might vaguely remember Neil and I playing pirates a few times when we were kids.

Of course, Hamming is up for the role too, and no doubt that if he gets it he wants his real life girlfriend to play the female lead.

This also probably means a shoot on location in Barnacle Bay.   They’ve even picked out the house they’re going to use.

Screenshot-71

It’s supposed to look like a castle.  I’m not sure if it does or not, especially given the pictures I’ve seen of the old castles.

Driving Miss Daisy

For the first time since being home, I took real steps to fix the mess that is my love life.

Screenshot-230

I gave Daisy a ring from my dad’s study.  She said she’d be over in a few.  So I decided to shave off the stubble I’d been trying to grow for my movie project (now that I know I can grow it, I don’t need to look like a wolf LOL)

Screenshot-238

I met Daisy at the art gallery, and I was shocked by how different she looked.  “You like it?”

Um…

“Seriously, you like it?”

Screenshot-239

I pretty much stood there with my mouth ajar.

“Say something!” she shouted.

“Um, you look … different,” was all I could manage to mutter.  She was stunning.  Gone were her braces and somewhat wild waves.

“I went to Francy yesterday when I found out you were in town.”

“Uh…you look great!  Seriously…”

Screenshot-240

“Um… Daisy … there’s something I have to tell you.”

My heart was pounding at about ten thousand beats a minute.

“Daisy, I can’t keep lying to you anymore.”

“Lying about what?”

“I don’t expect you to forgive me for what I did, what I did was horrible.  I did it without thinking and I’m sorry.”

“You leave and you don’t even say goodbye.  I hear nothing, NOTHING, from you for months.  I had to wheedle the truth out of Savannah.  Then I happen to pick up a tabloid and it’s broadcasting that you’d found someone else…”

I let out a deep sigh.  “I know.  Go ahead, beat me up.  I completely deserve it.  I was an idiot and I’m sorry.”

“So, are you with her?”

“Look, Daisy … I need to come clean and tell you the truth.  I didn’t tell my girlfriend in Bridgeport about you… and I didn’t tell you about my girlfriend in Bridgeport.”

“What are you saying?”

“I haven’t figured out who I want to be with – and I think I need some time.”

Daisy nodded.  “Time,” she repeated.  “Time.”

Screenshot-241

“My family is in turmoil right now.  My parents are divorcing, my sister is about to go mad, my nephew’s about to have a kid – my head is spinning in about ten thousand different directions.”

Daisy stopped.  “Noelle’s pregnant?”

“Yep.”

“Gosh, I forgot Neil was your nephew.”

“Things are pretty crazy right now, and I think I need some time to sort them out.”

“I understand,” Daisy whispered, “I understand.”

Screenshot-242

As a parting gift I left her with some flowers.

Back in the S.V.

Screenshot-72

Hey guys, it’s me, Sebastian.  I know it’s been awhile since I updated.  But some important things have happened.  Notice I’m growing some stubble.  Don’t worry, it’s for a movie role.

Screenshot-33

First and foremost, I’m back home in Sunset Valley.  Only for a little while, anyway, until filming starts on my new movie.  Feels pretty good to be sleeping in my own bed and looking at the sunshine for the first time in millennia.   I mean, Bridgeport is nice and all, but it’s not home.  You know?

But despite the pretty pictures, all isn’t well in the valley of the sun.  My sister covered the bases here: http://justplumbnuts.blogspot.com/2011/06/scenes-from-marriage-and-family.html

To sum things up here, my dad cheated on my mom.  He had a mistress, and my parents started sleeping in separate beds.  My sister called me at three in the morning the day she found out, and she was crying.  And you have to realize, my sister never cries.  Ever.

In response, my sister recommended them to the counselor who treated my brother-in-law’s midlife crisis.   The therapist has recommended family counseling for all of us so I’ll have to sit in on some sessions eventually.  I really don’t want to see a therapist, but I love my parents and want them to get back together, so I’ll do what I can to help.

Screenshot-78

My dad has the worst sweet tooth on earth, I swear.  He eats sweets for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  While I was in Bridgeport I had actually been making improvements in my diet but coming back home was disastrous for it.

“I wrote a new song,” dad said over the butler’s key lime pie.  “Wanna hear it?”

“Sure,” I shrugged.

Screenshot-76

“Join in,” he said.

“What to play?”

“Just any note that sounds like it’ll go with the tune.”

So, right when I had dad, I cornered him.  “What’s the deal about the mistress?”  I asked.

Screenshot-75

“Started out as a collaboration at work and it went on from there.”

“Who is it?”

“Dena Hart,” he sang.  I’d forgotten that dad had a beautiful singing voice.   When I sing I sound like a croaking frog.

“I’ve ended it though.  I told her I wanted to work on my marriage.”  Why did I get the feeling he was lying?

“I’ve hurt your sister, your mother – and yoooooouuuuu,” he sung again.

We’re going to family counseling in the morning.  The four of us – me, mom, dad, and my sister.

We used to be so close and do everything together.  How did we ever let it get this bad?  How did we let this happen?

Chat with Audrina

Screenshot-2Here's one

I went to school with a girl named Audrina Hill.  We were in drama club together.  Apparently she arrived in Bridgeport around the same time I did, and we caught up on Facebook.

Audrina Hill  Hey, we havn't really talked much in a long time,
How are ya? .
Sebastian Ryan Plumb June 1 at 12:06pm Report
My life has been pretty crazy. The Bridgeport life is starting to wear on me tho. I'm actually thinking about going back home to Sunset Valley. I don't know how folks would take it with me going back tho. lol .
Audrina Hill June 1 at 12:40pm I went through that exact same problem.. I was living alone and felt completley unsafe with the crazy paparazzi following me around, but my family recently moved to Bridgeport and that made things alot easier.. My boyfriend on the otherhand lives in Sunset Valley following his sports career.. I hope I'll get him to move here with me soon, but I visit alot (: .
Sebastian Ryan Plumb June 1 at 7:39pm Report
I mean now that I'm an actor and all, it's going to be weird going back. My sister, bro in law, and her kids are there, as well as my parents and my childhood sweetheart from HS, Daisy Ramsey (Savannah, historian that she is, says she is the grand daughter of a Dave Ramsey and a Gage Briody who used to live there). .
Audrina Hill June 1 at 7:42pm wow. yeah.. that's a really hard decision :/ .
Sent via Facebook Mobile .
Sebastian Ryan Plumb June 1 at 8:31pm Report
Yah, the gist of the sitch is, I'm not sure either Kyra or Daisy will want to see me at this point. I've basically screwed over both of them. Neither of them deserve that. .
Sebastian Ryan Plumb June 1 at 8:36pm Report
i feel terrible about what i've done... and i'm not even sure how to fix it. .

Me:  i'm between kyra and daisy and not sure i want to face either right now.

Report · 9:04pm

Audrina:  sounds really complicated :/:/

Report · 9:05pm

Me: oh it is. it usually is. i am a plumb and most of us have had complicated lives, lol

Report · 9:05pm

Audrina:  loll

Report · 9:06pm

Me:  so while i was in bridgeport i was throwing myself into my work making movies, learning lines, etc learning how to actand of course hitting the party circuit
the tabloids linked me to just about everyone but i was only dating kyra

Audrina:  go figure! ive had sooo many rumors roll around about me

Report · 9:09pm

Me: well bridgeport can do that to you.

Report · 9:09pm

Audrina:  yup.. leave it to the big city

Report · 9:10pm

it's what happens when you leave a small town and go to the big city. i left s. v. right after graduation

Me: got a role in a soap

i have an album on my page here with all the roles i've played

Report · 9:11pm

Audrina:  same, and nice! i'll take a look at it (: you should check out mine, i have photo shoots and club appearances..

im more a tv actress

Report · 9:15pm

Audrina: hah sounds like it

i usually just do realitiy

Kyra

Screenshot-1996

Invited my GF Kyra over on Sat nite.  We’d been dating for a few weeks.  We exchanged our niceties (sp) and then she shocks me.

Screenshot-1999

Kyra’s body language changed suddenly.  I knew something was wrong.  I had all sorts of scripts in my mind – was she going to break up with me?

I couldn’t blame her – if I were a girl, I wouldn’t date me.  Especially with my schedule the way it is.

Then she let it out.  The photo in her thought bubble let me know that her roommate Annabelle was the issue.

“Sebastian, we had a MAJOR fight.”  Kyra was on the verge of tears.

Screenshot-1916

“It started innocently enough, when we were at the hair salon.  She was going on and on about how miserable her life is and how she can’t get a break with her writing and how publishers keep rejecting her manuscripts…

Screenshot-1917

…and then she went on to criticize everything about me, especially my music.  Reminds me of my mother, sheesh, it's not as if I can't look after myself.... I mean, that's the whole reason WHY I left home in the first place.... plus she whines about just about everything, makes SUCH a drama out of it....I mean, it was cute to begin with, but now .... it's getting so OLD!  So, how about it? Can I move in ... or what?”

My feet were rooted to the ground and I wasn’t at all sure what to do, so I told Kyra I’d think about it.

Screenshot-2001

In the meantime I did let her spend the night.
